If you are staying in Denmark or another EU or Schengen country on a residence permit or with a residence card
If you are staying in Denmark or another EU or Schengen country on a residence permit or on the basis of a residence card issued under EU regulations, you can enter the Faroe Islands and Greenland without a visa.
This applies if:
your residence permit or residence card has been issued by Denmark
your residence permit or residence card has been issued by another EU or Schengen country.
In both cases, you must be in possession of a physical residence card.
An ID card issued by an EU or Schengen country that is valid for entry into Denmark does not grant entry to Greenland. You must therefore bring a passport. However, this does not apply to ID cards issued by a Nordic country, which are also valid for entry into Greenland.

Anordning nr. 182 puts the Danish Aliens Act in force for the Faroe Islands and is the instrument that creates the entry regime: § 1 grants citizens of Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden the right to enter and stay without permission, § 3 fixes the visa-exempt stay at 90 days in 180, and § 4 requires every other foreigner to hold a Faroe Islands visa. Bekendtgørelse nr. 636 implements it, setting out the visa exemption categories and visa rules.
The Immigration Service states that a third-country national staying in Denmark or another EU/Schengen country on a residence permit or an EU residence card may enter the Faroe Islands without a visa on that document, and that a physical residence card must be carried; the service's news notice of 20 March 2026 records when this route opened.
